Dr Brendan Hayman

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Brendan Hayman obtained his medical degree from Monash University in 1990 and then undertook psychiatry training at Monash Medical Centre and the Alfred Hospitals. He gained his fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2000, and has then worked in a combination of both public and private psychiatric practice.

His public hospital appointments have been at the Royal Melbourne Hospital / North Western Mental Health, in both Consultation Liaison psychiatry (the interface between medical illness and psychological issues), and psychogeriatrics.

He is currently working predominantly in private practice at the Hawthorn Road Consulting Suites (HRCS) in North Caulfield, which he established in 2004. Dr Hayman remains the medical director of HRCS.

Dr Hayman’s private practice involves general adult psychiatry. He has a particular interest in psychotherapy (counselling and talking therapy), but also has wide expertise in biological/medical psychiatry. His approach is patient oriented, tailoring the appropriate treatment to the individual patient and their issues.

Dr Hayman has a University appointment with the University of Melbourne.  He is a Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.

Dr Hayman has extensive experience in medicolegal assessments. He conducts independent medicolegal assessments for both plaintiff law firms and insurance agencies (TAC and WorkSafe), as well as other independent bodies.  He has long been a member of the Medical Panels, (medicolegal/judicial tribunal) since his initial appointment in 2007.

Dr Hayman is a foundation member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry.

Dr Hayman is also a faculty member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Faculties of Psychotherapy and Old Age Psychiatry.

Dr Hayman is registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Register of Australia), and the General Medical Council (UK)

Dr Hayman has completed training in the use of the American Medical Association Guide to Assessment of Impairment 4th Edition, and has completed training in the use of the GEPIC.  He is an accepted Section 112 Examiner for the Victorian WorkCover Authority and Transport Accident Commission.
